Leicester Riders feature in our first live game

The Leicester Riders are set to feature in our first webcast this Friday, January 8th.

Things are looking good for the Riders. A long winning streak has earned their coach, Rob Paternostro the Molten BBL Coach of the Month award for December. It’s a deserved win, the Riders have still only lost once this season in all competitions.

Paternostro masterminded his team’s safe passage into another BBL Cup Final and ensured Riders remain well-placed in 2016 to continue to challenge Esh Group Eagles Newcastle for the BBL Championship title.

They started December with a BBL Cup Semi-Final second leg victory against London Lions, completing the job and wrapping up a coveted berth at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham on Sunday 17 July against the Eagles, with a 75-65 success.

The first of a trio of BBL Championship triumphs and also consecutive road wins came at Manchester Giants, as Riders eased their way to a 76-66 victory.

This Friday they return to the Copper Box to take on this season’s less fancied London Lions, although with the exciting win against the Plymouth University Raiders still uppermost on their minds, the Lions will be looking to continue their recent good form.

Can they maintain their current form? Find out on webcastsport.com where you can watch the match live, for free

Kabaddi roars again

More Kabbadi for you – live from India

Kabaddi has also featured in Bollywood movies such as:

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein

A Kabaddi match can also be an ‘impress-your-sweetheart’ technique. In other words, ruthi girlfriend  ko manana ho, toh play a match  with some professionals and get beaten hollow. Trust us, this trick will definitely work wonders. Even though, it didn’t help Sriram (Imran Khan) win over Dia (Kareena Kapoor) in the movie.

 Tevar

This movie is yet to be released, but the word is already out that it’s a remake of 2003 Telugu film, Okkadu. It is based on the life of a Kabaddi player, played by Arjun Kapoor.  We’ll also get to see Sonakshi Sinha as the female lead. There will be a Kabaddi night match that will showcase Arjun’s talent as a Kabaddi pro. Let’s wait and watch, what Tevar has to offer!

This sport  has been a part of numerous pop culture references. The 1993 movie Little Buddha starring Keanu Reeves has a scene which depicts the game of Kabaddi.

The three-day tournament will see the sport’s best international teams do battle for a share of $200,000 in the tallest and largest indoor tunnel (5.03m x 20.73m) in the world. International judges will mark the teams and individuals on their performances with the prize-giving set for Saturday (November 28).

Despite just a year of team flying under their belts, Dubai-based sky- divers Naomi Kotzee and Shayni Couch are set to take on the world when the 2015 Clash of Champions, the world’s richest indoor tunnel flying event, gets underway at Inflight Dubai on Thursday (November 26)

Competing under the name “Password Is Taco”, the two girls will face a stiff test in the 2-Way Dynamic discipline and are hoping their own local knowledge will give a slight advantage in the world’s richest indoor tunnel flying event, staged under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai.

“But this will be our very first competition together as a team so our main aim is to have fun, to learn and to gain exposure – and to look good of course! We can’t wait to see what we can take from the experience and move on towards our next competi- tion. Korfball – Random Sport Generator

The RSG has been hard at work today and it has come up with the World Korfball Championships.

It looks like a less strict netball, more flowing and the goal is a yellow hoop without a net.

There are teams from all over the world competing and we are getting to the pointy end of the comp.

There is a website for more information at:

World Korfball Championships 2015 – Belguim

Wednesday, November 4 – Quarter Finals

England Game – 1600 CET – press play to watch

[su_youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2la8Nr10Q1E” width=”1600″ height=”900″ autoplay=”no”]

About the game:

Korfball (DutchKorfbal) is a ball sport, with similarities to netball and basketball. It is played by two teams of eight players with either eight females in each team or with four females and four males in each team. The objective is to throw a ball through a bottomless basket that is mounted on a 3.5 m (11.5 feet) high pole.

The sport was invented by Dutch school teacher Nico Broekhuysen in 1902. In the Netherlands, there are around 580 clubs and over 100,000 people playing korfball. It has a mixed-gender league and an all-women league, but no all-men league. The sport is also very popular in Belgium and Taiwan, and is played in many other countries. Mixed-gender korfball is more generally played in the north of the Netherlands, while all-female korfball is generally played in the south.

Rules and regulations

Equipment

Korfball basket with ball

Korfball is played inside in winter and outdoors in spring and fall.

The size of the indoor court is 20 x 40 m (22 x 44 yd), outdoor courts are 30 x 60 m (33 x 66 yd). The new outdoor courts size is 40 m x 20 m.The court is divided into halves called zones. In each zone is a 3.5 m (11.5 ft) tall post with a basket at the top. This is positioned two-thirds of the distance between the center line and the back of the zone.[1]

Team

A korfball team consists of eight players; all female, or four female and four male.[4]

Every team has their own coach, who can switch players during a match, negotiate with the referee, create the formation for the match and keep up the team’s spirit.[1]

Match

Korfbal match in the Netherlands

A korfball match consists of two periods of 35 minutes (the youth teams play 20, 25 or 30 minutes), with a break of 10 minutes in between periods.[1]

Four players of each team are in one zone, and the others are in the other zone. During the match they cannot switch zones. In the mixed gender league, men and women play side-by-side, but duels are man to man and woman to woman. However, it is allowed for a player to switch among opponents whom he/she is defending, as long as they are of the same sex.

At the beginning of the match one team chooses one-half of the court. That half will be their defending zone, with ‘their’ basket in it. Players score by throwing the ball through the opponents’ basket. After two goals, the teams change zones: defenders become attackers and attackers become defenders. In between those zone-changes, attackers cannot set foot on their defending zone or vice versa. At half-time teams swap halves.

The rules prevent physical strength dominating the game. Blocking, tackling and holding are not allowed, as well as kicking the ball. Once a player has the ball, one cannot dribble, run or walk with it, however, one can move one foot as long the other remains on the same spot. Therefore, tactical and efficient teamwork is required, because players need each other to keep the ball moving. A player may not attempt to score when defended, which occurs when the defender is in between the opponent and the basket, is facing his/her opponent, is within arm’s length and attempting to block the ball. This rule encourages fast movement while also limiting the impact of players’ height compared to their opponents.
